the golden pool

The next morning when they woke up there was a great blue heron fishing for its breakfast in the river. To the left of them were many hummingbirds hovering and drinking nectar from a flowered vine that trailed up the cliff’s wall. Even though it was daytime, a few owls called hoo hoohoo hoo hoo and there was a roar of answers called back to them from what sounded like dozens of different birds. The children had never been this far from the village in which they had grown up, had never seen so many exotic birds, or heard so many different bird songs before.

The river had such an abundance of fish that it was easy for the girl to catch fish for breakfast with her hands. The boy gathered walnuts from a nearby tree and they ate until they were full. Instead of going back home, they decided to follow the river to see if they could reach its source.
