This is a warning to you that I am not a business woman or an editor. I simply created this press in order to market my own books and later had an idea that if it became a place where other people could market their books, it would benefit many people by creating a broader audience and recognition for the authors involved. The press has no money, currently the only distribution is via the internet, and if you become involved you will be responsible for the costs and tasks involved in printing your book and the majority of marketing and distribution of your own works.
If you are still interested, please read the general information on submissions first and then you can scroll down or click on the links provided for the specific information that pertains to you.
General Information
You should have read the home page already about why this press was created. I do believe that anyone who works hard on what they do deserves to be published and that there will always be at least someone who really relates to what you write. But at the same time I am not interested in promoting work that I think is terrible or boring or offensive. What is terrible or boring or offensive? I guess it varies, I will know it when it is submitted. Though if your work is simply a vehicle for a diatribe of hate you have towards a race or group of people, I am not interested. I am interested in working with you if, your personality is open so that you are easy to deal with, and I like and/or respect your work.
That being said, as of this moment, I am interested in all sorts of work. And if you are already self-published, and are just interested in using this press to further your own marketing, it will be relatively easy for you to market it through here. I will also still look in all the other genres not mentioned below such as non-fiction, but I am most interested in the following:
- FICTION: This includes all types of fiction, "experimental","literature", and whatever other categories that have been defined elsewhere. Though any sort of "formula" book probably will not interest me. And also, I can't say I have ever really been a fan of romance novels, action/adventure stories, war stories, or thrillers.
- SHORT STORIES: See above description of fiction.
- PUBLISHED JOURNALS: I am not sure if this is actually an official category of writing, but what I mean are personal journals with writing and/or sketches. A form of non-fiction in a way...
- ART BOOKS: Any sort of book that is devoted to paintings, drawings, photographs, sculptures etc.
- COMIC BOOKS/GRAPHIC NOVELS/ZINES
- SCIENCE FICTION: I really love good science fiction, especially books which use the genre to explore social, political and personal issues.
- POETRY
I have definite preferences as to what I like to read, but I get surprised all the time. Even the magazines at the doctor's office can make me pretty happy sometimes. But I also would like to create a certain consistency within the press, so that it could be relied upon for unique, intelligent, and interesting books.
How To Submit Your Work
Right now I am mostly interested in people who have already published a book either on their own or through another press. If you have a manuscript and you would like to publish it, go to the self publish page to get an overview of what is required to self publish your own book. In the future we may begin to accept manuscripts that are either completely printed by the press, self published with the press logo, or both. I will post the manuscript guidelines on this site when that happens. Any books submitted, or books self published and then submitted, will carry their own press logo or no logo at all, and not the Three Blackbirds Press logo.
First of all, please make sure that you already have a published book before you submit it. You will first need to write me a letter. Hopefully this will not be a letter that sums up your book in two catchy phrases, or goes in depth on how hard it has been for you to get published. What you should send is the type of letter you would write to a friend, or wish you could write to a friend. Write me a letter and pretend this to yourself, that I am going to be walking down some crazy road on a misty day, and I will find your letter in the ditch, and read it, and wish I could meet the person who wrote it. You could write about your friend who can't decide if he is Jesus or the devil, or the time your mother went crazy, or what it looks like outside your window, or your philosophy of the world, or someone you admire, or your favorite dream, or what you had for breakfast, or the planet where the beautiful, tall, spindly, grayish blue, twiggy creatures live, or anything else. Funny or sad or demented or crazy or made up or true. It is not an essay, it is a letter, it can digress and change as much as you want. Just please try and write what you want, and not what you think will please or impress me. It can be however long or short you want, though I would appreciate if you could aim to keep it down to just a few pages. And if it is short, that it conveys to me some sort of sense of you.
Note: All letters will become the sole property of me, and I will retain the rights to publish them, or unaltered parts of them on this site or elsewhere in the future. You can request to remain anonymous if that bothers you...
Along with this letter you will also need to submit some sort of example of your work. Please click on the links below or scroll down to the category relevant to you.

Submission Info for published authors
You should have already read the home page and the above information on this page. If not, please do and then continue. If you are an author that has a book that you have previously self published with or without your own press label, or under a different press yet you have rights to distribution, you are welcome to submit the book to this press. Unless our personalities clash, or I just don't get your book, the submission of your work should be easy and sucessful. In doing so you will gain a spot on the website, and as the press grows, any other benefit that comes from being part of the press. Hopefully this will include distribution contacts, price breaks at the printing press, and a broader audience. You will still be in charge of everything to do with your book that does not pertain to this website. Distribution responsiblities via this website will be worked out upon acceptance. If you distribute your own book, that is, recieve the order through the website, and send the book out on your own, any money you make is your own.
The main issue I see for the smooth operation of this press is that the authors involved are dedicated and fair and honorable in their dealings. As any dishonesty will reflect back on the press and the other authors involved.
Submission requirements for published authors- The Letter as described above. It can be handwritten as long as it is legible. Please make sure that your name, contact info (must be an address or e mail address, not a phone number), and the title of your work are at the top of every page. If the letter or contact info is illegible, it negates the entire purpose of your submission.
- A copy of your book. If you desire this copy can be returned to you ONLY if I do not accept your book. (If you have multiple books, send at least one, and give a BRIEF example of any others you wish to be displayed on the site.)
- A self addressed stamped envelope for the reply, or an e mail address that is regularly checked. I will not reply otherwise. Also if you would like your book returned, in the event you are not accepted, please send enough postage to cover the return. If the postage is not enough, you will not get your book back, and if the book is accepted, I will return the postage along with the reply.
Please mail all submissions to:
Address taken temporarily off website, the press is located in boston. please email ThreeBlackbirds Press for mailing address, sorry for the inconvenience.
MAILING ADDRESS ONLY- the office is closed to the public without an invitation.
If you wish, you can email me or fill out the form on the mailing list page so that I will be aware that your letter is coming. I will reply as soon as I can, if you send an e mail address I will notify you once I have recieved your submission and give you a clear idea as to when you will hear a reply.
Upon acceptance into the press we will communicate about the exact things that you will need to send here. But to give you a basic idea of what will be required, read the following-
A PC disc, (or e mail me the files) either cd or floppy. with either a .jpeg or .gif picture of the cover of your book. Also some .jpg, or .gif files with some of the following: excerpts from your book, the back cover, thumbnails, title page, text or html- author bio, your contact info, views on life,- anything you want your book to be represented by on the site. See other authors on the books page for examples. If you know html and have an idea for any of your own layout just include an html document on the disc. Also you will need to set up your own account with ccnow or figure out some other method of payment(a link to your own site is fine).
I will be maintaining this site for the sale of my own books, it is not being run for profit. Any money you make from your books is your money. If you would like to help in the press in some way, there are plenty of opportunities for that, just let me know.
Submission info for all others
Right now the press is not officially accepting manuscripts, but you should know that because you should have read the general submissions paragraph already. Go to the self publish page to get some information on what is involved in self publishing, it is not hard, but is time consuming and can be tedious. If in the future the press gains recognition and I have more time and hopefully more help and some money, I will publish the manuscript submission guidelines on this site and begin to actively seek submissions. If you would like to be notified when this occurs, please join our mailing list.
Small Press Submission Info
If you are a small or independent press with books, zines, etc. for sale or to promote, you can send me an html one page document to upload to this site with either, links to your own site, or postal mailing info and a highlight of some of the books etc. you promote. You can bypass the letter as stated above (though I like the letters, so if it interests you to send one, please do). Please send a url for me to see, and/or press info, either of which MUST contain a little information about you as a press, and an overview of the books etc. that you promote. You can also simply send me your url and I will add a link to your page on my links page. Please understand that all sales will occur within your own site.
